What is Containers for Change?

The Queensland Government introduced the Containers for Change scheme in 2018. The scheme allows people to return empty, eligible, drink containers to an authorised refund point for recycling to receive a 10c refund. This is a statewide effort to reduce street litter and environmental impacts of single use containers.

Mackay Recycling is proud to service Mackay with a convenient recycling location to return your eligible containers for redemption via your preferred method of refund.

What containers are eligible or ineligible for recycling?

You can check your container eligibility for a 10c refund logo, however some states differ with eligibility. Think - cans, plastic bottles, beer bottles, juice boxes etc. From November 1 2023 new containers will be accepted including wine & spirit bottles - watch this space !

Do you accept crushed cans?

Yes, we accept crushed cans for recycling, however we prefer whole cans as they are easier to handle and process.

How will I receive my refund?

Customers can elect to be paid via cash, electronic bank transfer, PayPal or donate to registered organisation. Create a scheme ID via the Containers for Change website to get your refund via EFT or PayPal.

How do I bring my drink containers to site?

We encourage use of reusable storage options such as chaff or bulka bags as these are stronger and avoid contributing to waste. Re stacking glass bottles into the cardboard cartons they were sold in is also a safe option for transporting and avoiding breakage.

Remember wine & spirit bottles are heavy, we encourage you to have sturdy containers and mix them with lighter containers to avoid breakage or hazard when unloading.

What do I need to know before bringing my drink containers in?

Collect containers, ensure they are eligible to avoid disappointment. Ineligible containers can be placed in your yellow top council, kerbside bin as these will not be paid for or accepted at our sites.

Lids must be removed and fluids drained.

We encourage you consider re usable bags or crate options as these are safer for handling and reduce environmental impacts. Your own personal protective equipment such as gloves are not essential but encouraged.

Consider how you would like to collect your refund. If choosing electronic fund transfer, a member number will need to be created prior to your containers being processed. Head to the Containers for Change website to sign up.

Do you offer a bag drop service?

Yes, we have designated bag drops at our Mackay Harbour site. This offers Mackay locals a recycling option, even if they are time poor.

A scheme ID will need to be created prior, bags will be tagged and refunds processed within 1-3 business days.

How do I create a member number?

How can I raise funds for my club, association or business?

Contact us to find out how we can assist with commercial solutions to meet your needs. Mackay Recycling is passionate about assisting Mackay Schools, clubs, workplaces and associations. A recycling service where the funds remain local.

Your club, association or business can register for a Containers for Change scheme ID. Members of the public can choose to contribute their container refund proceeds direct to this ID.

How can I hire a recycling bin for an event or charity drive?

Contact us to discuss a range of hire or service options that will work for your event. We can offer various sized recycling bins according to your space or needs. We are proud to deliver Mackay a no fuss, recycling option for cans, bottles and other eligible beverage containers.

Do I need to remove lids from containers before bringing them in?

Yes, containers require the lids to be removed to be eligible.

Do I need to sort my cans & bottles before bringing them in?

Our friendly staff are able to assist you sort your containers. However, sorting glass from all other containers allows a faster process, regardless if these are counted manually or through our counting machines.
